AP and Other Stories Summary and Analysis of thesis of biotechnology A P, Part 1. This story is narrated by essays politics Sammy, a young cashier at of biotechnology the supermarket A P. One day, three girls in bathing suits stop in to buy some snacks. Sammy is psychosynthesis, immediately struck by a “chunky” (596) girl with a “sweet broad soft-looking can.” He is of biotechnology, so attracted to her that he accidentally rings up a box of crackers twice, provoking the ire of the middle-aged customer who was trying to buy them. Mis Coursework? By the time Sammy calms down the irate customer, the girls are making their way towards an aisle close to his checkout slot. He notices that the girls are barefoot. None of them are particularly beautiful; he characterizes the first as chunky and “pale” and of biotechnology the second as “the kind of girl that other girls think is very ‘striking’ and ‘attractive’ but never quite makes it.” However, he quickly identifies the protein third as their leader, noticing that she walks slightly ahead of her friends and almost seems to thesis of biotechnology, be showing them how to command attention. He infers that it was her idea to come to A P in the first place.
He calls her the queen or, later, Queenie. The Database? Sammy notices that the thesis of biotechnology straps of the queen’s bathing suit have slipped off her shoulders, so there is no clothing between the top of the mis coursework bathing suit and the top of her head. He is in awe of her beauty, and marvels that only an extraordinarily pretty girl could get away with walking into thesis, a grocery store with her straps down. He continues to on world without, stare at thesis of biotechnology her physical features, including her long neck and for design and manage the database her oaky hair. The other people in the store are shocked by the girls’ skimpy attire, as well as the fact that they are walking “against the usual traffic” (597) down the aisles. Sammy criticizes these “sheep” for looking askance at the girls but also being attracted to them. He speculates that “you could set off dynamite” (598) in an A P and the shoppers would still go about their business as usual. Nevertheless, they do seem a bit “jiggled,” with some women even turning around to thesis of biotechnology, look at mis coursework the girls again, as if they cannot believe their eyes. Thesis? Only ten years before John Updike published “A P,” his New Yorker colleague J.D.
Salinger rocked the literary establishment with his first novel, The Catcher in the Rye . There are striking similarities between Holden Caulfield, the main character of Salinger’s novel, and Updike’s narrator Sammy. Both hold a deep-seated contempt for authority and hypocrisy. But while Salinger’s hero is so self-absorbed that we never get an objective perspective on his world, Sammy is sharply perceptive, offering insights about human nature and society at large. The main action of “A P” unfolds not in the grocery store but in merchant Sammy’s mind. Thesis? It is synthesis, not a chronicle of his ordinary day at work, but rather of thesis of biotechnology his rejection of nz bourgeois conformity. Some critics trace Sammy’s heritage not to Holden Caulfield but to Ralph Waldo Emerson, who advocated for non-conformity and moral self-reliance (Porter 1155). In the early pages of “A P,” Sammy establishes his contempt for conformity and consumerism, insinuating that the people who shop at A P are “sheep” (597) who can never be roused out of their daily routines. This critique is cemented by his detailed description of the store. Sammy locates himself “between the checkouts and the Special bins” (596) and thesis describes the girls going up “the cat-and-dog-food-breakfast-cereal-macaroni-rice-raisins-seasonings-spreads-spaghetti-soft-drinks-crackers-and-cookies aisle” (597).
This careful delineation of the essays politics story’s space suggests an underlying concern for realism despite Sammy’s lighthearted rhetorical style, which often relies on caricature. Sammy’s list of grocery items in the aisle is humorous, but it also indicates a deep sense of unease with the rampant consumerism in American culture. None of the foods Sammy lists are nutritious. Thesis? They are all snack foods or condiments—or in the case of the pet foods, not for human consumption at all. Rather than a necessity for survival, Updike portrays grocery shopping as a lavish exercise in self-indulgence. By buying so many unnecessary items, he suggests that people abstract themselves from their physical existence as human beings. Essays Politics? Sammy’s sexual desire for the girls initially seems to be an antidote to thesis of biotechnology, this deadening consumerism.
If the other shoppers have, in conforming, sacrificed their humanity, then the girls’ rebellion against social norms seems to be a refreshing dose of human vitality. This interpretation is reinforced by their nakedness; by forgoing regular clothing and the conformity that comes with it, they embrace their fundamental human nature, and the beauty of this spectacle is stunning to study and manage the database, all who witness it. However, there is an alternate interpretation of the girls’ nudity. They are consumers just as much as the thesis older shoppers are, and like those shoppers, they embrace unhealthy foods, looking at cookies before finally deciding to buy the herring snacks. They are conformists in their own way, with the queen leading the mis coursework other two girls who timidly “peek around [the queen’s body] and [hunch] over a little” (597). Although he knows nothing of their personalities and concedes that two of the thesis girls are unattractive, Sammy still lusts after them. His sexual desire, then, is just as greedy and overindulgent as the shoppers’ desire for snack foods. Essays Politics? Over the course of his career, Updike has sometimes been accused of misogyny (Shapiro, Roiphe). Based on his descriptions of the women in the story, Sammy certainly seems to have a misogynist worldview. He insinuates that the young girls are catty exhibitionists, but the brunt of his contempt is reserved for thesis older women.
These middle-aged housewives, he suggests, are the engines of American consumerism, and case for design he consistently belittles them, describing them as “houseslaves in pin curlers” (598). His account of the middle-aged woman at the beginning of “A P” is dehumanizing; he calls her a witch and thesis of biotechnology compares her to a bird, calming her down by “[getting] her feathers smoothed and her goodies into essays merchant of venice, a bag” (596). Although the character’s outlook should not necessarily be extended to Updike himself, there are certainly grounds to criticize his treatment of thesis women. pianist resume (2002, 148 min, UK/FR/DE/NL/PL) Director: Roman Polanski. Reading the below before seeing the thesis, flick will RUIN this movie for you. This is a blow-by-blow account of the movie with some (okay, many) initial reflections thrown in. The film starts off with -- you guessed it -- the essays merchant of venice, siege of Warsaw. The movie opens with black and white blooming to color. The Pianist, our Hero Wladyslaw Szpilman (played by Adrien Brody), plays and is interrupted by the initial rounds of the bombardment blowing a hole through the building. The war has reached his city, but he's not as concerned for himself as modern viewers know he should be.
When he returns to his family (uninjured) the thesis, film does not comment on their foolishness for staying, nor mention how typical or doomed this thought patter would become. At this point, the film is mostly bright, and the city is solid and lively (despite the war). As the troops come in, the buildings seem to change in character. Essays Politics. They are lit more coldly, and shown from sharper angles. Things get dirtier, and grey. Despite subtle changes in the camera's view, the film continues to 'document' events without much in the way of comment (though this is, of thesis course, a fictionalization of a real person's story). We see the family express some concerns about German occupation, but they expect that war will end soon.
Events unfold. Restrictions are set. Essays Politics. Jews are particularly restricted. Thesis. The family complies to one set of demeaning requirements after another. They witness how anything short of synthesis immediate obedience to Germans results in swift and brutal punishment -- and while they experience it first hand, it is only in blessedly minor ways compared to how they see others treated (which is to say, none of the family are killed in Warsaw). As things go from worse, to worse, to even worse than that, Szpilman gets increasing cut off from his past prestige. Thesis Of Biotechnology. By October 31st, 1940, all Jews must abandon their homes and move to a ghetto designated by essays merchant of venice, the Germans.
The piano is sold for next to nothing, and the family moves with cattle-like throngs of other Jewish families to a tiny apartment where they will spend the next couple years. We watch the events that Szpilman carried with him. The film shows German troops ridiculing Jews, and thesis grabbing old folks, those of odd carriages and with injuries and protein forcing them to dance for the entertainment of the Germans. We see a body on the street that no one moves. Of Biotechnology. We see a home invaded, and an infirm elder thrown off a balcony to his death when he fails to rise from his wheelchair when so commanded. More importantly, we see the shrinking world from the POV of a secrecy behind a window pane. Mis Coursework. This theme gets repeated more and of biotechnology more as freedoms diminish. The ghetto is cramped and poverty stricken. The larger Warsaw is inaccessible.
Then, the horror all viewers knew was coming arrives. In August of 1942, the Szpilman clan -- like so many other families between that July and September -- are rounded up and shipped to study the database, the Treblinka death camp. While being held for processing, folks wonder what their fate will be. Thesis Of Biotechnology. They can't imagine Germany would slaughter such a massive potential labor. It'd be a waste. The senior Szpilman points out that too many are old men, young children, and women -- not ideal labor. There is essays politics, a question as to what will happen, but the family doesn't have know what history has already told the of biotechnology, viewer. We know what will happen, and we fear.
As the trains are bordered, Wladyslaw Szpilman is yanked out of mis coursework line by an acquaintance in the Jewish Police (a group widely regarded by Szpilman and others as stooges for of biotechnology the Germans). Szpilman protests being separated from his kin, but the protein, cop shuts him up, and in just a few words convinces Szpilman to seek hiding. He does. The doors to the train cars are slammed on the distraught passengers. We see a littler of belongings left behind surrounding the bodies of a few who hadn't obeyed German orders fast enough.
With nothing left but outrage, fear, grief and disbelief, Szpilman seeks refuge. He has lost his family, his community, and is on the run. Everywhere he turns, there is ruin and of biotechnology death. He sees a family who'd printed resistance pamphlets outside their home -- all shot dead. On one street after another, he sees the chaos of possessions left scattered in the forced rush to either comply with German law or escape from it. The ghetto is deserted. He is electronics, alone. He seeks refuge in familiar places, and eventually returns to thesis, the cafe where he's played piano.
A friend is hiding there, and offers him temporary shelter, but it won't last. [Historical note: of the almost 400 thousand Jews originally in mis coursework Warsaw, almost 380,000 were sent to the Ghetto, and 265,000 of those were sent to Treblinka. Others escaped either before the thesis of biotechnology, Germans entered the city, or before the Germans established the ghetto. Still others were killed before and during the enforcement of the essays of venice, Ghetto's boundary. By January of 1943 it is estimated that only of biotechnology 40,000 Jews -- one tenth their original population -- were left in Warsaw.] He ends up working as labor for the Germans. Merchant. He hears that the trains take people in to Treblinka, but only thesis of biotechnology empty cars return, and food is never seen on synthesis the lines. He must realize his family is doomed. Conditions are brutal, and he does not do well.
Other laborers kindly get him a less manually intensive position. Thesis Of Biotechnology. The movie does not show anyone saying this, but there seems to be a cost to the lighter work duty -- he has to help smuggle guns into the almost-empty ghetto for the few who remain. The movie takes a turn here. Throughout, the film is less compassionate towards Szpilman's character than it might be. Though he acts charitably when convenient, we increasingly see him putting his needs before the needs of others. Examples: when the merchant of venice, movie begins, he is thesis, more interested in continuing to play than in the war.
When he returns home, the brother is the most radical of the family, and his actions reveal -- though not detailed -- counter the mis coursework, more tempered response of our Hero. Szpilman does act to get his brother out of jail, but the action is of biotechnology, followed by the brother's rebuke that Szpilman was not thinking of the electronics, brother when he did it, so it seems more about wanting the family together than for reasons of compassion. Szpilman does take great risk in smuggling weapons into the ghetto, but did he have a choice? More importantly, shortly after taking this job (in film time) Szpilman is nearly discovered in of biotechnology smuggling, and asks for help getting out of the ghetto. Essays Politics. He abandons his fellow Jewish laborers. From there on out, he MUST give his own needs priority. This is the only survival strategy available. He is helped out, and reaches a female peer who admired him, it has been days since he's had anything but grief and depravation. Yet in thesis of biotechnology this time of trial, his first words to on world, her are, I'm sorry. I'm dirty. I'm so filthy.
He weeps and she accepts him in all his disheveled misery. Thesis. Note that his words are ones of personal disgust at his condition, yet the movie is reflecting larger horrors. As such, the words don't sound as selfish as they might. His friend can't risk keeping him. She gets him fresh clothes, and burn his old German issued work uniform in the kitchen stove. Auckland Nz. He must move again. He is of biotechnology, told to stay in an abandoned apartment where he is locked inside. He can hear every sound through the walls, and must keep as quiet as possible.
His isolation begins. April 19, 1943: the Ghetto Uprising begins. Szpilman silently views what he can from the mis coursework, window. After almost a month (May 16th), the dust settles, the buildings used by the resistance are destroyed, and of biotechnology the 'rebels' are dead. When his friends return, he (unselfishly) laments, I should have been there. The tragedies seem endless.
A friend tells him that if the Germans come, Szpilman should throw himself out the window. He can't be taken alive (lest the names of conspirators be tortured out of protein him). In fairly short movie-time, we then see (again, by means of silent glimpse through a closed window) that, yes, the Germans are coming. Alone, and with restrained panic, Szpilman opens the window, puts a chair under it to thesis, use as a step, and moves the table out of the way so he has a clear path to his death. The Germans are inside the essay without, building. He can hear them on the steps.
We looks to the door, he looks to the window, and . and hears them at a different apartment. Sneaking glances downward from the sill, he sees them taking someone else away. There is a momentary relief, but the struggle continues. After the uprising, it is difficult for him to get food (mostly, he must rely on others). There is a long series of events where he is ravaged by hunger, and thesis of biotechnology utterly silent.
Dialog is sparse. While Szpilman is no longer being used like a beast of burden, he is now akin to a neglected house pet locked in a cage. Increasingly, the only action in his shelter is case and manage, a battle for hunger. Views from the windows increase as his life is further reduced. In August of 1944, a rebellion outside his rooms brings a German counter attack on thesis his building. He must flee. The building is being blown apart from all around him. There is an especially nice (though too brief) interpretation of temporary hearing loss after a shell erupts in the rooms adjoining his.
As the blast explodes the protein synthesis, building, all sounds of the war are muted and thesis of biotechnology a metallic tone fills the essays politics, sound track. Just as suddenly, the masses of of biotechnology hostile noise resume as he tries to escape -- always trying upward routes first because the Germans are always entering from below. He is essays politics, uncaged, but lost in a world that means to destroy him. He can't think past the basic needs of food, water, and of biotechnology survival. Being quiet has become part of conditioning, and protein speech would be too human for this wreck to attain.
He acts only on instinct honed by raw fear. It gets to the point where he's been through so much horror, and is in so much need, that he becomes feral. He looks it, too. Thesis. He is unwashed, unshaven, and wearing tatters. He drinks fetid water because there is nothing better to be found. He injures himself as he takes flight from Germans razing his temporary hiding place, and his gait becomes a subhuman, shuffling limp. For Design The Database. He stumbles through an expansive backdrop of the remnants of Warsaw. Once a proud city, we see it now as piles of rubble fading to a grey dust against the horizon. It takes an excellent director to maintain tension without dialog (and with so many points where action is absent), yet Polanski achieves it.
The absence of dialog parallels the thesis of biotechnology, erasure of civilized life. The viewer has seen long stretches of waiting interrupted by harsh moments of brutality. This makes every silent stretch tense because we expect another outburst of violence could come at nz, any time. We've been shown that nothing can be done to prepare, and thesis of biotechnology that every eruption leads to death. So it is protein, that the animal which was once Szpilman finds a large (probably 5 gallon) tin of pickles. Unfortunately, German soldiers arrive at thesis of biotechnology, the building before he can open it. He scurries to hide, and must wait for them before he can attempt to open it. Eventually, he hears the cars pull out, and he looks for something to cut through the lid.
Famished and dehydrated, he finds a set of fireplace tools, and gives them a try -- noisily whacking the mis coursework, poker with the of biotechnology, shovel. Once before in essays politics the film, he's broken the silence (the shattering of dishes), and on that occasion, he was immediately jeopardized. Thesis. Once again, the same fate is in store. His weak and fumbling hands let the can slip, and essay on world the camera switches to show the precious fluid spill across the floor. No hand moves to save it. The camera pans up, and we see the boots of a German Officer.
Szpilman is as good as dead. A short interrogation leads to thesis, Szpilman claiming he is -- was -- a pianist. The Officer motions to a piano in merchant the parlor and tells Szpilman to thesis, prove it. This shot gets a little over-the-top as we see the defeated, ever-fearful Szpilman seat himself at a piano, try to relax is frozen and crippled hands, and approach the keys. Would the for design and manage, Officer slam the lid on his fingers? Would proof do any good? In a moment, it does not matter, as Szpilman's fingers find the keys and he becomes lost in of biotechnology the world of his Art.
The audience is taken along on this pleading journey of pain filled notes. A distant yet exceedingly bright light shines through the cracked wall to give a halo to our Hero as he performs. Mis Coursework. The light is of biotechnology, a bit too convenient -- especially when showing Szpilman's breath against the cold winter air -- but the music is powerful. When he finishes, the Officer approves of the performance, and protein Szpilman cries. The Germans make the building a temporary Headquarters, and of biotechnology the Officer keeps Szpilman a secret and auckland nz brings him food. Thesis Of Biotechnology. As the Russians pull in, Szpilman is given more food and the Officer's coat. At this point, it is auckland nz, possible that Polanski threw in a jab at Spielberg's Schindler's List. Of Biotechnology. In that movie, Spielberg's employs this crude and obvious device: in a black and white film, he gives color to a lone child's red coat. This may be the cheapest ploy of modern cinema in mis coursework a supposedly 'serious' movie. As if the Holocaust is of biotechnology, not tragic enough, Spielberg hammers home the point that Nazis were not nice people with the merchant of venice, device of the girl's coat -- as it the millions of deaths, the tortures, or cruel medical experimentations were not enough. Here, in The Pianist, Polanski uses the German Officer's coat much more effectively.
As the Russians pull in, we see him rushing to the liberators with no thought to of biotechnology, the fact that he's wearing the Enemy's uniform. The audience was at essays of venice, the edge of their seats as he mindless runs at the Russian troops. Of Biotechnology. He hugs a fellow survivor, and the cry goes out, German! German! Szpilman pulls back, confused. The Russians fire on him, and essays of venice once again, he must flee to refuge. They have him trapped, and grenade the building where he hides. After begging to thesis of biotechnology, surrender, they realize he is Polish, and ask, Why the fucking coat.
He replies, Because I was cold. It is simple. It feels honest. One wonders if Polanski was visually telling Spielberg, This is how to do it right. The film has reached its conclusion, and all that is left is the epilogue. We see freed death camp prisoners snub captured Germans. One of the POWs turns out to be the very Officer that helped Szpilman. He asks a freed Jew to tell Szpilman where he is.
The film then shows Szpilman go to that location, and find no one is there. The film closes with Szpilman performing, and overlays of follow-up information printed on protein the screen. Szpilman never found the Officer to help him, but records indicate he died in a Soviet prison camp. Szpilman continued his career, and was well regarded.

While I sat in the car and watched the miles pass by, I developed the plan for case study for design and manage the database, my empire. I reasoned that, for the world to run smoothly, it would have to look presentable.
I would assign people, aptly named Fixer-Uppers, to fix everything that needed fixing. That old man down the street with chipping paint on his house would have a fresh coat in thesis, no time. My childhood self would appreciate that. Bridget takes a somewhat different approach than Stephen, but her essay is just as detailed and engaging. Let's go through some of the strengths of her essay.
A Structure That’s Easy to Follow and Understand. The essay is of biotechnology, arranged chronologically. Bridget starts each paragraph with a clear signpost of where we are in case study and manage the database, time: Paragraph 1: “after a long day in thesis, first grade” Paragraph 2: “in elementary school” Paragraph 3: “seven years down the road” Paragraph 4: “when I was a freshman in high school” Paragraph 5: “when senior year arrived” This keeps the reader oriented without being distracting or gimmicky. As much as I would enjoy it, I now accept that I won't become Emperor of the World, and that the Fixer-Uppers will have to remain in my car ride imaginings. Or do they? Basically, I would get to do what I love for the rest of protein my life. …But it occurred to me that, while my desired occupation was decided, my true goal in of biotechnology, life was still to become a Fixer-Upper. What makes this essay fun to read is that Bridget takes a child’s idea of a world made better through quasi-magical helpers and case study the database, turns it into a metaphor for the author’s future aspirations. It helps that the metaphor is a very clear one: people who work with students with disabilities are making the world better one abstract fix at a time, just like imaginary Fixer-Uppers would make the world better one concrete physical fix at a time. Every childhood Fixer-Upper ever. Ask your parents to explain the back row to you. (JD Hancock/Flickr)
This essay uses many techniques that make Bridget sound genuine and make the reader feel like we already know her. Technique #1: humor. Notice Bridget's gentle and relaxed humor that lightly mocks her younger self’s grand ambitions (this is different from the more sarcastic kind of humor used by Stephen in of biotechnology, the first essay—you could never mistake one writer for the other). In elementary school, I already knew my career path: I was going to be Emperor of the World. I was like a ten-year-old FDR.
Technique #2: invented terminology. Case Study For Design And Manage. The second technique is the way Bridget coins her own terms, carrying them through the whole essay. It would be easy enough to thesis of biotechnology simply describe the essay without electronics people she imagined in childhood as helpers or assistants, and to simply say that as a child she wanted to thesis of biotechnology rule the world. Essays. Instead, she invents the capitalized (and thus official-sounding) titles “Fixer-Upper” and “Emperor of the World,” making these childish conceits at once charming and iconic. What's also key is of biotechnology, that the titles feed into psychosynthesis the central metaphor of the essay, which keeps them from sounding like strange quirks that don’t go anywhere. Technique #3: playing with syntax. Of Biotechnology. The third technique is to mis coursework use sentences of of biotechnology varying length, syntax, and structure. The big pothole on Elm Street that my mother managed to hit every single day on the way to school would be filled-in.
It made perfect sense! All the people that didn't have a job could be Fixer-Uppers. As much as I would enjoy it, I now accept that I won't become Emperor of the World, and that the Fixer-Uppers will have to remain in my car ride imaginings. Or do they? Maybe instead, a Fixer-Upper could be a tall girl with a deep love for thesis of biotechnology, Yankee Candles. Maybe it could be me. The first time when the comparison between magical fixer-upper’s and the future disability specialist is made is when Bridget turns her metaphor onto herself. The essay emphasizes the essays importance of the moment through repetition (two sentences structured similarly, both starting with the word “maybe”) and the use of a very short sentence: “Maybe it could be me.” To be honest, I was really nervous.
I hadn't had too much interaction with special needs students before, and wasn't sure how to thesis of biotechnology handle myself around them. Long story short, I got hooked. The last key moment that gets the small-sentence treatment is the emotional crux of the essays politics essay. As we watch Bridget go from thesis nervously trying to synthesis help disabled students to thesis falling in love with this specialty field, she undercuts the potential sappiness of the moment by relying on changed-up sentence length and slang: “Long story short, I got hooked.” The best essays convey emotions just as clearly as this image.
What Could This Essay Do Even Better? Bridget's essay is very strong, but there are still a few little things that could be improved. Explain the car connection better. Psychosynthesis Nz. The essay begins and ends with Bridget's enjoying a car ride, but this doesn't seem to be related either to the Fixer-Upper idea or to her passion for of biotechnology, working with special-needs students. It would be great to either connect this into the essay more, or to of venice take it out altogether and create more space for something else. Give more details about being a teacher in the Applied Behavior Analysis summer program. It makes perfect sense that Bridget doesn't want to put her students on display.
